There was a time in my life when I believed that caring meant holding on tightly.
I probably held on a little too tightly to everything, especially my dreams and
to things I had worked hard to create—and even harder to maintain.
I poured myself into everything. Not halfway; all in. I told myself that such a firm grip meant I was committed, disciplined and wired for greatness.
Somewhere along the way, I started to notice something.
My grip—this tightly held intensity—wasn’t giving me more freedom.
It was giving me anxiety. I wasn’t just committed. I was entangled.
This is the part nobody tells you when you’re chasing excellence— that the very thing you’re holding onto the hardest is the thing that’s holding you back from accessing your true potential.
Non-Attachment is a principle I didn’t just study—I had to live my way into it.
Non-attachment is not about disconnecting or pretending you don’t care.
It’s not about becoming neutral or checked out.
Non-attachment is about staying rooted—so rooted—that you no longer need to control the outcome in order to stay connected to your power.
That was the shift that changed everything for me.
I see this so often with the high performers I work with—especially in sport.
The culture tells you to care more, to want it more, to push harder.
Even though you may be told that outcome isn’t everything how do you not obsess over the outcome, the stats, the title, the legacy when everything seems to rest upon performance.
What happens when your entire identity becomes entangled with a result? When that happens you lose the thread of who you are without it.
Even worse, you start chasing performance from a place of fear—fear of losing, fear of not being seen, fear of not being enough. And when that happens, your focus tightens. Your nervous system stays on high alert. And flow disappears.
The shift came for me through presence.
I remembered and reconnected with the part of me that existed before the outcome, before the proving, before the measures of success.
This is a quieter space that most of us rarely give ourselves permission to live in.
But it’s where clarity lives. It’s the place inside you that says, “I’m still here. Whole. Even if nothing great happens today.”
When I started making decisions from that space, everything changed.
I wasn’t less driven. I was more focused, More discerning and more available for the moments that mattered—without being consumed by the ones that didn’t. I was more of the essence of myself.
The paradox of non-attachment is that when you stop trying to control every variable, you become more powerful because you are more present and with presence comes precision.
When that happens you are no longer performing for approval— you’re participating in something deeper.
You can love the game, train with full devotion and give everything to the goal—and still let it go because you know who you are without it.
That’s what real freedom is.
So if you’re gripping tightly right now—to the role, the result, the version of yourself that feels like it has to succeed—take a breath.
Ask yourself gently:
Can I care this deeply… without clinging?
Can I stay committed… without collapsing my worth into the outcome?
Can I give my all… and still let go?
Sometimes, the deepest form of mastery isn’t holding on—
It’s knowing when to release.
